Yohimbe bark 8% extract as Yohimbe Pure is a proprietary yohimbe bark standardized to 8% yohimbine. It also has a higher amount of yohimbe related alkaloids. Yohimbe is the only herb listed in the "Physician's Desk Reference" as supporting sexual function. The U.S. Food and Drug Amdninistration (FDA) approved yohimbine (the active ingredient in yohimbe) as the only plant-derived treatment for impotence years before Viagra came along. Called "Herbal Viagra" by the February 1999 edition of Environmental Nutrition, Yohimbe's power geefrom the yohimbine alkaloid. The alkaloid yohimbine blocks alpha-2-adrenergic nerve activity, which normally constricts the blood vessels. By blocking this nerve activity, vessles are allowed to dialate. The result is that yohimbe increases blood flow while reducing blood pressure. Increased blood flow enhances a man's ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
Yohimbe is a tall evergreen forest tree native to Southwestern Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon and the Congo. The bark of the tree contains approximately 0.8%-1.2% yohimbine. This makes processing yohimbe bark into a high concentration, such as Yohimbe Pure, an extremely difficult task. Yohimbe bark contains up to 6% total alkaloids, 15% of which are yohimbine. Most gepetitors' yohimbe bark extract refers to 8% yohimbine related alkaloids (at 15% this would generally be 1.2% yohimbe).
