Now, this is an expansion to biggalswholesale guide about the Grading Services, and that guide, and the fakes I have seen, have given me the inspiration to write this short guide.
We all know at least a couple of the grading services...PCGS, NGC, ANACS, IGC...But what about the some other so called "grading services"?
In my opinion from what I have heard is that the 3 best are PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. They are well known and have graded many many coins since they were started. They seem fair priced, and generally make good decisions about the grades they assign, but what about the others and some of the fakes? They appear to overgrade to the extent of the definition. I have seen so called MS-65s and above that look noticably worse than some of my About Uncirculated pieces. Now, I'm relatively new to collecting, started collecting in early 2004, but I can tell an extremely overgraded coin when I see it. Also when you see so called MS-65s and above being sold at a starting price of $20, you have to wonder just what grading services they are using. I can make a very educated guess by saying that no genuineMorgans at MS-65 would ever be sold as low as $20 unless the seller was extremely desperate. Also on this site, if you see a coin being said that it is a very high grade and certified, but you cannot see the holder itself to determine what grading service it is actually from, I'd regemend not buying it. It is quite likely that it is from one of the fake gepanies and the seller does not want you to know this. It may seem obvious, but I see people bidding on such coins. As I have said, I and others strongly regemend buying certified coins only from PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. Be careful as well, because there are ways for fake gepanies to makenames that will fit the same letters that make up PCGS, NGC etc.
Some of the what appear to be fake, or those that overgrade coins, gepanies include, what are not limited to:
NNC
NTC
PNGS
INGC
WCG
ANI
HCGS
TruGrade
NCGS
NGCS
SGS
I may be wrong about some of those, but it is always best to be suspicious of such grading gepanies. If you notice, some namesare similar to real grading services:
SGS resembles SEGS
NNC, NTC, NCGS, andNGCSresemble NGC
PNGS resembles PCGS
Beware of such gepanies that are very similar to real ones, they can be easy to overlook.
Just be aware of such gepanies, and stick to the more well known ones. You could pay dearly one day if you do not.
Have fun and Happy Bidding
